Feature: Wade Blevin's 'Sam's One Bug' Fly
Check out Wade Blevin’s ‘Sam’s One Bug’ warmwater fly. Wade is one of Alabama’s fly fishing gurus. He has been tying and successfully fishing this fly, designed by his late father Craig 'Sam' Blevins, for 40 years. With the fly, Wade is carrying on his father’s tradition and promoting the sport of fly fishing. E-mail him at samsonebug@gmail.com. Or you can tie one yourself (instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2UhUmra66c).

From Wade:
Thank you for your interest in Sam’s One Bug!
This simple foam popper was designed in the early 80’s to be a more durable popping bug. The goal was to reduce the costly mistake of casting expensive custom painted poppers against bluffs, sea walls and objects that might crack or chip the popper. Those errant casts were not kind to balsa and cork style poppers. The light foam body of the Sam's One Bug is much easier to cast than most poppers, it takes a considerable amount of abuse, it bounces off the rocks, it does not crack, and it comes in a variety of fish friendly colors.
“After catching a hundred plus bream, three smallmouth bass, and five largemouth bass on the same fly, it was dubbed the One Bug – I needed only one bug to fish all day!” – Craig “Sam” Blevins, Fly fishing and Tying Journal 2002. My father tied thousands of these poppers over the years before he passed away in 2005. He often gave them away to encourage the sport of fly fishing or simply to strike up conversation. To my knowledge, he never sold a single bug. Many have asked to purchase and that is why I provide this letter as an explanation. This is a gift. It’s one way I can carry on my father’s tradition, promote the sport I love, and provide a story about the ultimate Gift. Bear with me as requests often get backed up and my time is limited. I will send a USPS tracking label when the bugs are shipped. If you haven't already provided a current mailing address, please do so.
Should anyone desire to help promote the Sam’s One Bug, donations are certainly accepted and greatly appreciated. Donations help offset the costs of materials and shipping charges.
Donations can be made to the PayPal account: waders9493@gmail.com.
Please consider passing along any success stories, pictures, funny tales as well as any issues you may encounter concerning the Bug by emailing me at samsonebug@gmail.com.
This fly has been my most productive pattern for warm water fish and brought me so many great memories on and off the water. I hope you enjoy fishing my dad’s unique popper as much as we do.
Let’s get poppin’!
